Where I Found the Best Ever Santa Train
For years friends had been sharing pictures and experiences that they’d had on local Polar Express and Santa Trains. I knew that it would be something that my kids would really enjoy but I wasn’t sure which one to choose. So last year I researched some area trains in the Philadelphia suburbs and even one in New Jersey. There were actually quite a few of them. I noticed that some of the trains could be really expensive – more than $100 per ticket. Some of the trains reviews weren’t that great – things like…the train being cold and not very comfortable and serving cold hot chocolate and running out of cookies. I started to second guess this train thing – I had an 18 month old and I certainly didn’t want to pay $400 for our family to be freezing cold for an hour on a Santa Train.
Fast forward to a few weeks later…I came across a fantastic train experience called Santa’s Paradise Express on Strasburg Railroad in Ronk’s, PA (they actually do year round train adventures too). I had no idea where Ronk’s, Pa was, but turns out it’s located very close to Lancaster, PA (so I popped into the Potterybarn Outlet on the way- you kind of have to right). It only took us about an hour to get there from our house. We actually had another family on our train from Brooklyn. I think it’s a totally doable trip from NY, Philly or NJ.
When you first arrive at Strasburg Railroad you’ll notice it’s like a little village with gift shops, a cafe and even a little shop where Mrs. Claus can help your kids craft their letter to Santa Claus. I would highly recommend getting tickets for the train in advance online and then pick them up at the window. Last year I noticed a few people arrived (with their children in tow) and tried to purchase at the window and they were sold out. Ugh! That would be terrible!
I booked a little bit late last year and the only tickets available were in first class. (First class tickets were only around $30 per ticket. Compared to the $100+ I had been looking at on other trains, this seemed really cheap.) I’m so glad that we ended up in the First Class Lounge train, because the seats were captains chairs and we also had a food and wine service. Could it get better than wine on the Santa Train – I don’t think so. Did I mention that I had a cheese plate too?
Oh yes, getting back to Santa. The train slowed down to a stop about mid-way during our trip and Santa and carolers visited the train and took pictures with everyone. We then continued our ride through the country side and then back to the station (it was about an hour ride total). All of the children received a lovely wooden Christmas Ornament from Santa Claus as a keepsake. The waitress also handed out cookies and hot chocolate along the way as well. It was a really fantastic experience and our kids enjoyed every minute of it!
I would highly recommend the Strasburg Railroad. It’s very affordable in comparison to some of the other local trains. Everyone we encountered was extremely friendly and made this an amazing holiday experience. We can’t wait to return this weekend!
